All The News That Fits

I Love My Job

“And what do you do?”

“Oh, I’m a politician.”

Eyes roll, furtive glances are exchanged, nervous smiles, suppressed sniggering…

Ah, but I love it anyway.  I have met so many wonderful people doing this and made so many friends.  And, it is never the same from one day to the next.

I am just a grassroots politician holding a local position.  You know, one of the people you can call any time of day or night if you have a problem.

I got a call and spent part of this evening with residents who were working on a drainage problem on their property.  She had accidentally snagged a drainage pipe with the backhoe (yes, she – she’s an experienced heavy equipment operator), which has definitely created a problem.  It also brought to light apparent existing problems with the pipe under the road. Tomorrow’s work is already lined up, sorting it all out and figuring out what needs to be done.  Expert advice will be needed.

I met more neighbors.  I got input on how the speed bumps are working in front of the beach, what they think of the proposed fire station, where speeding is bad in the area, what they think of park improvements that will be going in soon, etc.  Very productive evening.

While attention is focused on those seeking powerful office, don’t forget the many grassroots politicians working to keep government functioning on the local level.  They’re the ones you may actually meet, and who will come out to your house when there’s a problem.

Yep, it’s not a bad life.
